It was the first time Sara had been in her fatherТs room since his marriage to Helen, and because of her own physical awareness of Gavin, she was embarrassingly self-conscious of her fatherТs relationship with his young bride and, rummaging in his bedside table, felt line an interloper.
The tablets she was looking for were not in the drawer and she went to search in the bathroom cabinet. They were not there either and she paused by the bed, trying to think where else he could have put them. Her father had always kept close at hand, for he complained that it was at night when he felt most in need of them. Without giving herself time to think she crossed the carpet and opened the communicating door that led to HelenТs room. Here too the bedside lamps were lit, though they cast their glow on far more opulence than in Sir WilliamТs room and it smelled heavily of the scent she used. The bedcover had been turned down and a flimsy nightdress lay across one pillow. Sara glanced at it and then quickly turned to the bedside tables. But the pills were not there either and she went back into fatherТs room for a second search. She was by his dressing table when she heard HellenТs voice and, glancing over her shoulder, saw she had left the communicating door ajar. УYou can cut the pretence now,Ф Helen was saying. УNo one is going to come up here and disturb us.Ф УBy all means letТs be honest.Ф It was a manТs voice, and Sara, in the act of moving over to close the door, stopped dead.
